Deep bed sand filter is a kind of equipment used for water treatment. It effectively removes suspended matter, colloids and some organic matter in water through deep filter bed. Its filter bed is usually composed of multiple layers of filter media such as natural quartz sand and anthracite, and adopts downward flow gravity filtration. When water flows through the filter bed, suspended matter is trapped on the surface or pores of the filter media, thereby achieving water purification.

Features

 

High-efficiency Filtration
The filter bed depth of the deep bed sand filter is usually between 1.5 meters and 2 meters, which is about 50%-70% deeper than the filter bed depth of the traditional rapid filter (generally 0.6 meters to 1 meter). This allows the particles in the water flow to have a longer contact time with the filter media, making it easier for suspended matter to be retained by the filter media. Therefore, it can effectively remove suspended matter with a particle size as small as 10 microns, and the effluent turbidity can be stably controlled below 0.3 NTU, which improves the filtration efficiency by 30%-50% compared with traditional filters.

 

Strong Denitrification Ability
When treating sewage, the deep bed sand filter can also carry out denitrification and denitrification reactions through the microbial communities attached to the filter media, and simultaneously remove suspended matter and nitrates in the water. When the hydraulic load is 8-10 m³/m²·h, its denitrification efficiency can reach 80%-95%. For example, when used for municipal sewage treatment, the total nitrogen content in the water can be reduced from 20 mg/L to 3-5 mg/L, meeting more stringent environmental emission standards.

 

Low Backwash Water Consumption
The deep bed sand filter adopts air-water combined backwash technology, and the water consumption for each backwash is only 1.5%-2.0% of the treated water volume. Compared with the traditional filter tank, which consumes about 5%-8% of the treated water volume, the backwash water consumption of the deep bed sand filter is reduced by 60%-70%. Taking a water plant with a daily treatment capacity of 10,000 m³ as an example, about 10,000 m³ of backwash water can be saved each year, greatly reducing the operating cost.

 

Small Footprint
The deep bed sand filter adopts a compact design, and each filter unit occupies an area of ​​about 5 m², while the traditional filter tank requires 8-10 m² at the same water treatment capacity, which reduces the footprint by about 40%. For example, in a water plant with a daily treatment capacity of 50,000 m³, the use of a deep bed sand filter can save about 150-200 m² of construction land, greatly reducing civil engineering costs.

 

Working Principle

 

The Filtering Process
Filtering with media filters is done by filtering water through a thick layer of graded particles, called the filter bed. These particles can be sand, gravel or other granular materials. The filtration degree depends on the effective size of the bedding and the water velocity through the filter.
Raw water enters from the filter inlet (1) and percolates through the filter bed (2). Suspended materials come into contact and attach to the media particles. Clean water flows through the filtration nozzles (3) and out of the filter via the outlet valve (4).
The gradual dirt buildup in the filter bed causes an increase in the pressure differential across the filter and when it reaches its maximum design value, a cleaning process should be performed. In automatic media filter installations, a pressure differential switch senses the pressure differential and when it reaches a preset value, the self-cleaning process begins.

 

The Cleaning Process
Cleaning is done by backwashing; pressurized water flows in reverse direction – from the nozzles upwards, causing suspension of the filter bed, thus releasing the suspended matter from the bedding. The dirt particles are then washed out of the filter through the back-flush valve. In automatic media filters installations, the cleaning process is done by the system's controller. When the pressure differential switch senses that the differential pressure across the system reached a pre-set value, a signal is sent to the flushing controller and the self-cleaning process begins.
