MMF Multi-media filter (also known as mechanical filter) is a process that uses one or more filter media to pass water with high turbidity through a certain thickness of granular or non-granular material under a certain pressure, thereby effectively removing suspended impurities and clarifying the water.
Commonly used filter materials include quartz sand, anthracite, manganese sand, etc., which are mainly used for water treatment turbidity removal, softening water, pre-treatment of pure water, etc., and the turbidity of the outlet water can reach below 3 degrees.
- Multi-media filters are widely used in water treatment processes. They most of them are used as pre-filtration for deep water treatment (exchange resin, electrodialysis, reverse osmosis).
- Multi-media filters are commonly used pre-treatment devices for deep water purification. Different filter materials can be added according to process requirements.
- Multi-media filters can be made of fiberglass, A3 steel anti-corrosion or rubber lining, and all stainless steel. There are two operating modes: fully automatic and manual. The automatic control uses automatic controllers imported from the United States and gas and hydraulic valves. It is easy to operate and maintain, and is widely used in pre-treatment devices of water treatment processes in various industries.
- The filter materials of multi-media filters (including mechanical filters) should have sufficient chemical stability, and the relative density and particle size of each medium should be different. The double-layer filter composed of anthracite and quartz sand, using anthracite with a relative density of 1.4-1.6 and a particle size of 0.8-1.8 mm, and the relative density of quartz sand is 2.6-2.65 and a particle size of 0.5-1.2 mm. In addition to the above two types of filter materials, three-layer filters can also use heavy ores such as manganese sand and magnetite, with a relative density of 4.7-5.0 and a particle size of 0.5-4 mm.
The Filtering Process
Filtering with media filters is done by filtering water through a thick layer of graded particles, called the filter bed. These particles can be sand, gravel or other granular materials. The filtration degree depends on the effective size of the bedding and the water velocity through the filter.
Raw water enters from the filter inlet (1) and percolates through the filter bed (2). Suspended materials come into contact and attach to the media particles. Clean water flows through the filtration nozzles (3) and out of the filter via the outlet valve (4).
The gradual dirt buildup in the filter bed causes an increase in the pressure differential across the filter and when it reaches its maximum design value, a cleaning process should be performed. In automatic media filter installations, a pressure differential switch senses the pressure differential and when it reaches a preset value, the self-cleaning process begins.
The Cleaning Process
Cleaning is done by backwashing; pressurized water flows in reverse direction – from the nozzles upwards, causing suspension of the filter bed, thus releasing the suspended matter from the bedding. The dirt particles are then washed out of the filter through the back-flush valve. In automatic media filters installations, the cleaning process is done by the system's controller. When the pressure differential switch senses that the differential pressure across the system reached a pre-set value, a signal is sent to the flushing controller and the self-cleaning process begins.
