CF Activated carbon filters use adsorption methods to effectively remove organic matter, colloids, heavy metals, residual chlorine and other bad odors from water, and reduce the color of water. Activated carbon is currently the most widely used adsorbent. There are micropores of various shapes in the middle of its lattice structure, forming a unique porous structure, thus forming a huge adsorption area, so the adsorption capacity is particularly strong.
Activated carbon filters use adsorption methods to effectively remove organic matter, colloids, heavy metals, residual chlorine and other bad odors from water, and reduce the color of water. They are widely used in factory and urban water purification, as well as reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, ion exchange system pretreatment process section and improve the inlet water quality of various deep purification.
- Activated carbon is made of coal, charcoal, fruit core and fruit shell as raw materials, and is processed by high-temperature carbonization and activation. It has a large specific surface area (1 gram of activated carbon has 800~2000㎡). Therefore, activated carbon has a very high adsorption capacity.
- When activated carbon is used for dechlorination, hypochlorous acid is adsorbed on the surface of activated carbon and decomposed into hydrogen chloride and atomic oxygen. Oxygen atoms and carbon atoms quickly change from adsorption state to chemical state (carbon oxide). Therefore, there is no problem of adsorption saturation in activated carbon dechlorination, but only a small amount of carbon is lost, so activated carbon dechlorination can run for a long time. Activated carbon can not only dechlorinate, but also filter out suspended matter, humic acid, colloids, heavy metals and odors remaining in tap water.
- The regeneration and activation of activated carbon usually adopts thermal regeneration method, that is, the activated carbon is decomposed into carbon dioxide and water by high temperature conditions of 500~1000°C by high-pressure steam blowing or soaking in sodium hydroxide solution.
The Filtering Process
Filtering with media filters is done by filtering water through a thick layer of graded particles, called the filter bed. These particles can be sand, gravel or other granular materials. The filtration degree depends on the effective size of the bedding and the water velocity through the filter.
Raw water enters from the filter inlet (1) and percolates through the filter bed (2). Suspended materials come into contact and attach to the media particles. Clean water flows through the filtration nozzles (3) and out of the filter via the outlet valve (4).
The gradual dirt buildup in the filter bed causes an increase in the pressure differential across the filter and when it reaches its maximum design value, a cleaning process should be performed. In automatic media filter installations, a pressure differential switch senses the pressure differential and when it reaches a preset value, the self-cleaning process begins.
The Cleaning Process
Cleaning is done by backwashing; pressurized water flows in reverse direction – from the nozzles upwards, causing suspension of the filter bed, thus releasing the suspended matter from the bedding. The dirt particles are then washed out of the filter through the back-flush valve. In automatic media filters installations, the cleaning process is done by the system's controller. When the pressure differential switch senses that the differential pressure across the system reached a pre-set value, a signal is sent to the flushing controller and the self-cleaning process begins.
